The skyline trended downwardsby the left, so tha.t the open route to the top wasnot so long in point of distance as the other. It certainly was easier to work up the wall to theleft. It rose at a steep angle, and was columnar instructure, with long, porphyritic slabs crowned bysmall levels of tufted grass. The leader would oftenbe unable to help his followers with the rope, but thesuccessive ledges could be so chosen that no greatdistance would exist between the resting-places.Such open work is often more trying for the nervesthan harder chimney climbing, but it is alwaysadmirable practice when the ledges are reliable, I had quitted the gully by this variation threeyears before, and wanted both on my own accountand that of my friends to work out the alternativeroute.
