To speakdefinitely, it was much worse than the arete, andseeing no alternative I returned to the corner andprepared for another attempt. This time Aslilevgave me a shoulder at a slightly lower level on theghyll side of the ridge. I mounted their shoulders, and reachedup at arms length to a sharp and firm edge of rock,A preliminary grind of my boot into a shoulder-bladeand then a clear swing out on the arms, a desperatepull-up with knees and toes vainly seeking support, and at last the upper shelf was mounted. But wewere all breathless. The lower edge of the broken crest of rock thatmarks the Low Man was now close at hand. Closeby was the fine cairn built when the pinnacle wasfirst climbed from Lords Rake. A few yards off tothe east the edge of the cliff was cut by the top ofSlingsbys Chimney, and before us remained themagnificent ridge up to the summit. Boot scratches were now numerous, both alongthe ridge and by the left. We took the finish handover hand, and reached the pinnacle cairn in fiveminutes. Our time up from Lords Bake had beenslow—something like four hour
