as anxious tohave particularly good in view of myarrival and the journeys before us duringthe next few days. I was not the onlypassenger to alight at Canoe Lake. Twoyoung ladies were met by Mr. Salmon, the oldest guide in the park, and theirturkey appeared as though they hadbeen on a canoe trip before the one onwhich I saw them embark. In the after-noon, Ranger Robinson and myself re-turned to Canoe Lake station by way ofthe Corkscrew Creek, and from there either into other lakes or down the NorthRiver—a beautiful stream with a fewportages down to the Georgian Bay.Joe Lake is notable for its own chainof lakes. There is not only Joe, butalso Mrs. Joe, Little Joe, Baby Joe, andJoe-Joe. Evidently Joe was a pioneerand explorer, who has left a deep impressupon that portion of lakeland. Traditionhas it that he was a trapper, and in theold days he knew these lakes better thanany of his contemporaries. IncludingJoe Lake, the canoeist can go through aseries of five lakes with good connections
Text Appearing After Image:
Headquarters of the Park Administration. went to Joe Lake, obtaining some sup-plies at the Store, and visiting the Al-gonquin Hotel, meeting Mr. Merrill, whoshowed us through the hotel and allowedus the privilege of admiring the splendidviews to be obtained from the roof ofthe building. We were told that theseason had been good, and every visitorappeared to have been delighted with hisor her vacation in the park. From JoeLake it is an easy portage to Canoe Lake, and once in that lake, trips can be made between them, and enjoy a days paddleand fishing without the bother of a carryover. Mr. Merrill told me this trip -was afavorite one with his guests, and nextday, when I expressed a desire to seethis chain in all its glory. Ranger Robin-son was good enough to paddle me overthe whole route. Bear Lake was ourobjective, and we were in the canoe andaway early. Our only portage was fromCanoe into Joe, and then it was an in-teresting paddle all the way through Joe WITH THE RANGERS IX ALGONQUIN
