Title
Roma zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: Roman copper alloy zoomorphic brooch 15.18 mm long, 13.71 mm wide, 6.69 mm thick. The object is in fair condition and weighs 1.49 grms. It is a fragment of a plate brooch representing the back-end of an animal whose species is probably a hare. Starting from the right, the creature is missing its head, ear and fore leg; it has a thin straight back with a fairly complete back leg (whose inclination does not suggest movement), but the tail is missing. The surface of the brooch has no trace of enamel cells. On the flat reverse side, the semi circular lug is present and retains two visible coils and part of the pin. The classification of the animal is tricky since all the typical defining features are missing (e.g. the head, the tail, the ears); moreover, the Hattatt's catalogue does not provide any exact match to the brooch under consideration, although it can be compared to a hare or a dog brooch.
