Title
Roman: Brick
Description
English: A fragment of handmade brick or similar ceramic building material. This is most likely to date to the Roman or Medieval period (50 - 410 AD or 1300 - 1500 AD). The fragment is relatively thick and irregular in plan. The fabric is a relatively hard fired earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit and quartz inclusions. It is also has large amounts of mica and organic material within it. The colour is an oxidised red on the exterior, and grey/black on the interior, which suggests differential firing. The fragment is smooth and water washed. Not enough of the fragments survive to suggest the size or shape of the bricks, but they are similar to bricks dating to the Roman or Medieval periods.

The fragment measures 54.9mm in length, 50.6mm wide and 26.7mm thick. The fragment weighs 72.2 grams.
