Title
Roman: Ceramic Building Material Brick
Description
English: Regular mud-stone nodule used and shaped into a brick (ceramic building material) of probable Roman date (100-350 AD). The nodule is a similar size to the other examples (HESH-EA0F18 ) and found at the same site. It is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. It is formed from a fine grained silt or mud stone which is mica rich. It is a uniform grey colour with a slightly powdery surface. There is evidence of mortar or other similar compound on both the upper and lower faces of the nodule suggesting it had been used in a wall or building. The mortar has decayed to a mid-grey brown colour and is rich in both mica and also small regular and rounded grit. A Roman date is suggested solely on the grounds that this was found with other bricks of Roman date and that the site it was found on is securely dated to the Roman period through excavation. The mudstone brick measures 90.5mm length, 85.4mm width, 39.85mm thick and weighs 473 grams.
