Roman: Ring
Description
English: Cast copper alloy ring of probable Roman - Modern date (50 - 1800). The ring is broadly oval in plan and lentoid (hexagonal) in cross section. The profile of the ring is slightly distorted and this may be due to wear rather than movement in the soil. There are traces of irregular file marks on several surfaces. There is no obvious cast or incised decoration present. The ring is a light - mid green colour with a well developed patina which covers all surfaces. The patination of the metal would suggest a Roman or possibly Medieval date. The function of the ring is varied and although it is worn a direct use cannot be attributed.

The ring measures 30.2mm length 27.2mm width, is 3.1mm thick and the hoop is 4.4mm thick. The internal diameter is 23.4mm x 19.2mmmm. The ring weighs 5.21 grams.
