Title
Roman : Dragonesque Brooch
Description
English:

An incomplete cast copper alloy brooch of Roman date. The brooch is of the dragonesque type dating to the 2nd century AD.

The brooch is curvilinear forming a roughly S-shaped piece which is decorated with five recessed rectangular cells. These cells would once have been in filled with enamel but this no longer remains. The body of the brooch terminates in two worn breaks at either end from which the diagnostic "dragon head" terminals would have projected. The reverse of the brooch is undecorated and neither the pin nor catchplate remain.
The metal is a light brownish-green colour and is worn. The brooch is 25.8mm long, 13.4mm wide, 2.5mm thick and weighs 2.5g.

A parallel can be seen in Hattatt, p.351, fig.210, no.1025.
