Title |
Roman Dragonesque Brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy dragonesque brooch of first to second century AD date. The brooch measures 34.8mm by 24.6mm by 7.4mm and weighs 7.3g. The brooch is in the form of an S-shaped plate, although part of the lower terminal has broken off. The surviving terminal is in the form of a head with a curved snout and circular eyes which are recessed to take enamel. The beast's ears appear to have broken off from the top of the head. Its chin connects with its 'chest', probably as an extra precaution against loosing the pin should the loop expand (Hattatt 1982, p. 153). The central section is convex with a diagonal ridge across the centre. There are traces of red and blue enamel within the recessed areas of the moulded decoration, which consists of a border of small squares around a central circle, which contains two opposing pelta motifs and a smaller circle on each side. The back of the central part of the brooch is hollow and the back of the surviving terminal is flat. The pin is missing but would probably have been looped around one of the necks and would have been secured at the other end. |
