Title |
Roman Incomplete Copper-alloy Zoomorphic Plate Brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch of Roman date, 2nd century AD. This plate brooch resembles a fish in its current incomplete state however the brooch was originally intened to be in the form of a bird with the head protruding up from the body. The head has broken off of this brooch and the scar where this break occured is visible. See Hattatt, p.361, fig.220, no.1153 for a complete example.
The brooch weighs 2.72g, has a length of 32.28mm and maximum width (across the wings) of 16.49mm. The plate part of the brooch has a thickness of 1.98mm. The tail forks and a small circular suspension loop is present between the divided tail. This loop has a diameter of 1.68mm. The central body of the bird is recessed and it is presumed to have originally have been filled with enamel, no missing. At the centre of this recessed cell is a raised ring, the height being that of the edges of the brooch, with a recessed centre. This circular cell is presumed to also have once been filled with enamel and probably in a contrasting colour. On the underside of the brooch the catchplate and pin are missing. The scar left by the catchplate is a length of 4.07mm and width of 1.36mm. 15.51mm from the inner end of this scar is the start of the double lug which originally help the pin. The double lugs have a length of 6.03mm, height of 3.70mm and combined width of 3.68mm. The gap between the two lugs is now completely blocked with mud and/or corrosion making it impossible to determine the exact width of each lug. |
