Title
Roman Zoomorphic Brooch
Description
English: A Roman copper alloy zoomorphic brooch in the form of a hen or cockerel (late 2nd century AD). The head and body project from a flat base that conceals the pin and catchplate. There is a break across the neck and the head is now missing. The body is hollow and the wings are decorated with semi-circular cells then a curve of triangular cells. The cells are infilled with red, yellow and blue enamel. It has twin lugs and the pin that hinges is complete. The catchplate is missing Bayley and Butcher (2004:174) note these seem to be a British product; a very similar example is illustrated no. T214. Crummy (2007) notes that the cockerel is often associated with Mercury and cockerel brooches have been discovered associated with places of worship for Mercury. Dimensions: length 30.41mm; width 17.80mm; thickness 17.88mm; weight 9.4g Reference: Bayley, J. and Butcher, S. 2004. Roman Brooches in Britain. The Society of Antiquaries, London. Crummy, N. 2007.
