Title
Roman Zoomorphic Brooch (front and side)
Description
English: A zoomorphic Roman brooch dating to AD 100-200. The brooch is shaped in the form of a hare or rabbit in profile (probably a rabbit as the back leg is not extended). There are traces of silvering. The rabbit has an eye comprising two concentric circles with a dot in the centre. The ear sweeps back with a line down the centre. The side of the rabbit is divided into three diagonal sections which may be cloisonne or champleve as there are traces of red and blue enamel. The feet of both the back and foreleg appear to have broken off. There is evidence of a catchplate on the back. Cf Hattatt (1989) A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattatt's Ancient Brooches p362 no 1191.
