Title
Roman Zoomorphic Plate Brooch
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy and enamel Roman plate zoomorphic brooch in the form of a horse. It is missing the head, part of the tail and back leg, as well as the shank of the pin.

The enamel has survived well as an elongated S on its side in the body of the horse. A central red enamel area is flanked either side by a now blue-ish white enamel. Both foreleg and rear leg extend from below the latter two enamel areas.

The tail projects a little way outwards before extending downwards, and the neck is decorated to the left edge with tiny diagonal grooves to indicate the mane. The head itself is missing.

On the reverse the spring and chord and top of the pin survive between two lugs. An axis bar also appears to survive, though this could be earth. The catchplate curls upwards, behind the neck.

Cf. Hattatt no.1182, with simlar mane and body decoration.

Measures 26.6x18.2x1.5mm and weighs 2.31g.

2nd century.
