Title
Roman Zoomorphic Plate Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy Roman zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a sitting hen or cockerel. The plate is a pointed oval in shape with a hollow back and domed body. From the pointed end projects the tail, while the opposite end has the conical neck and head of the bird. The head is approximately circular in profile, flat and has the remains of a very abraded crest or comb. The beak is missing due to old breaks and the eye is formed of a punched ring and dot motif. The body of the bird/plate is decorated with symmetrical enamelled panels separated by a slight ridge running down the back of the bird. This comprises a black enamelled body that contains two large semi-circular or sub-rectangular panels delineating the wings, there may also be traces of smaller fields to give further definition to the form of the bird. The uppermost of the two larger fields has the remains of inlaid blue enamel, and on one side of the plate there is a large irregular perforation caused by post-depositional damage that has all but removed the field on this side. The tail projects upwards from the pointed end of the plate. It is flat with a small circular perforation just above the junction of the plate and tail, which Crummy suggests may have been for the attachment of a chain (Crummy, 1983: pp. 15). The surviving section of the tail is sub-triangular in profile, but is missing the curved terminal end due to old breaks. The underside of the brooch is hollow and undecorated. At the head end there is the remains of a small integral catchplate that is largely missing due to old breaks. Beneath the tail is an integral pierced double lug from which the now missing pin would have hinged. The entire brooch measures 33.13mm in length, 17.48mm in width, 23.17mm in height, and weighs 7.14g. Similar hen or cockerel shaped zoomorphic Roman brooches are noted by Hattatt (1989: nos. 167, 620) and from Roman Colchester (Crummy, 1983: no. 75). These indicate a 2nd century AD date for the brooch.
