Title
Roman Zoomorphic Plate Brooch
Description
English: Copper alloy Roman plate brooch. Zoomorphic plate brooch in the shape of a lion. The snout is rather pointed but the animal clearly has a mane, shown as incised curves over the shoulders. Recessed circular cells filled with red and blue enamel are present on the body of the brooch. Incomplete: no tail present. The lion is in a leaping pose, facing right. Single punched roundel eye. The reverse is flat except for the pin mounting and catchplate lugs. The pin is missing. The brooch appears to be in a stable condition with a mid-green patina. Probably 2nd century date. See: IOW-2ECAE7; LEIC-75965.
