Title |
Roman Zoomorphic Plate Brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic Roman plate brooch in the form of a galloping horse, dating from the second century AD. The remains of the brooch consist of a portion of the horse's head, neck, mane, back and rear, galloping to the right. The brooch is missing the horse's snout, legs and tail, along with some spring coils and its pin. The brooch is bent slightly along its longitudinal axis. The form of the horse has been delicately constructed, with an incised line indicating where the ear would have been and a longer incised line and moulded section with incised lines depicting the mane. The rather small head connects to a thick arched neck, which slopes to a rounded flat back and an even more rounded hindquarter. In addition to moulded and incised decoration, a series of recessed cells are present within the body space, namely a series of five small cells directly below the neck on the horse's breast; remains of blue enamel are visible in three of these. A further two elongated and irregularly-shaped cells are visible extending into a reverse comma-shaped cell along the back into the hindquarters and the section fills the space below this, along the belly of the animal. Traces of enamel are visible near the hindquarters of the animal and may have also been blue in colour. The rest of the cells are missing their enamel.
On the rear of the horse is a double pin lug; between the lug is a double coiled copper-alloy spring still held intact on its iron axial pin, with two of the possibly four original spring coils intact. The pin is missing. It measures 29.9mm long. It is18.5mm at the widest point and 4.3mm wide at the narrowest point. It is 1.5mm thick and weighs 2.2 grams. The brooch is very similar to HAMP-63D811 and LEIC-4E2603 recorded within this database. It is illustrated in Hattatt (2000,358; ref. 1181). |
