Title
Roman Zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: A copper-alloy zoomorphic brooch in the shape of a stag dating to the Roman period, possibly the 2nd century AD.

The brooch is in the shape of running horned animal looking in the direction of travel. The animal has a rounded snout and possibly a sub-triangular ear on the side of the head. On the top of the head are a set of horns although one is broken. The neck smoothly extends downwards from the head and widens to form the body of the animal. The shoulder and haunches are raised in an angular fashion. The rear leg of the animal is complete however the front leg is broken. There is some evidence for a tail however this has been incorporated into the pin fixings. The back of the brooch is flat and undecorated. The hinge and catchplate are both still present however the shaft of the pin is missing.

Zoomorphic brooches were a common design during the Roman period and took many form including horses and wild animals. Stags and bulls are less common than the more frequently found birds. There are a few similar examples recorded on the PAS database including HAMP1260, SWYOR-201A54 and SF-98F782.
