Title
Roman Zoomorphic plate Brooch (horse) Lower surface
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic Roman plate brooch in the form of a galloping horse. The horse is galloping to the right. The brooch is missing its pin. The front leg is missing and the brooch is twisted slightly along its longitudinal axis. The brooch is delicately cast and quite thin in the hind leg and especially thin on the head. The tail is shaped to form a loop. The upper surface contains linear notches clearly delineating the mane and the ear of the horse and a small inset dot forms the eye. There are three main bands of cells within the body. The uppermost cell commences at the shoulder of the horse and extends along the back terminating in a swirl on the horse's hind quarters. This uppermost band still contains some blue enamel. The lowermost band extends along the belly of the horse, widening slightly as it reaches the front leg.The enamelling on this band is lost. Between these two bands on the front quarter of the horse there is a series of five sub-rectangular cells. These contain blue enamel.

The lower surface contains a broken and abraded catch plate towards the front of the horse. At the rear of the horse is a double pin lug, Between the lug is a double coiled spring including the broken remains of the pin.

The brooch is very similar to LEIC-4E2603 and HAMP-851675 recorded within this database. It is illustrated in Hattatt (2000,358; ref. 1181).
