Title |
Roman bone spoon |
||
Description |
English: A bone spoon dating to the first or second centuries AD. It has a small circular bowl with concave centre and flattened outer edges, one side of which appears to have suffered from damage and possible burning(?) either pre- or post-deposition. At one side of the bowl is the integral handle, which extends the full diameter of the underside of the bowl in the form of a pointed and tapering ridge. The handle itself is cylindrical in form and gradually tapers to a rounded tip. The entire object measures 104.10mm in length (22.42mm at bowl), 21.18mm in diameter/width at bowl, 6.16mm in maximum thickness, and weighs 2.99g.
This is a Roman bone spoon similar to metal examples excavated at Colchester and classified by Crummy as Type 1 spoons (Crummy, 1983: pp. 69, nos. 2008-2011). Crummy notes the lack of bone examples excavated at Colchester between 1971-1979 despite their presence in contexts excavated at a later date. She suggests they may have functioned as small spoons for eating things like eggs and shellfish and date to the 1st or 2nd centuries AD (Crummy, 1983: p. 69). This example is of probable similar date. |
