Title
Roman buckle pin, obverse and profile
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy Roman buckle-pin, perhaps a variation of the cruciform type. The buckle-pin is broadly trefoil in shape. One terminal is looped. On each side two prongs curve round towards the loop end to form a pair of 'C's perpendicular to the tongue. The side prongs are zoomorphic, perhaps reminiscent of snake jewellery. Eyes and mouths are delineated with grooves. The buckle-pin is otherwise decorated with linear tranverse incisions: three across the tongue, two at the junction of loop and pin, and on the side prongs. The tongue of the pin is arched. Buckle-pins comparable in form can be found in Jackson (1990, plate 5; figs. 48, 49). Jackson (1990, 32) states that 'these types of pin were common on military belt-buckles of the first century AD.'
