Ascoli (near), Substructure of Via Salaria Plate XXXI ROMAN CITIES 171 The simplicity of this gate is a warrant for Itspre-Augustan character. We have here the fin-est example of what the early Inscriptions call a2:)orta gemina,—a city gate with two openings,one for incoming and one for outgoing vehicles.At Rome the Porta Carmentalls appears to havebeen of this type. No other pre-Augustan gate,except the Pompeian, has preserved this type,and this Ascoli gate Is much finer. The structureof the voussoirs without archivolts and withoutinterpenetration is not only pre-Augustan: itrather indicates a date not later than the third orsecond centuries before Christ. It is of largeblocks of well cut travertine of the severest tj-pe,without molding or decoration. Not far from Ascoli, toward Acquasanta,there is a notable bit of retaining wall of the ViaSalaria, In beautifully pohshed and jointedblocks of white travertine in opus isodomum ofthe Augustan age, and of the same age is thesuperb brid
