This housewas at first of only one room, like the circularhut, though surrounded by a covered loggia, butthe aristocracy soon developed a residence withseveral rooms grouped around a central court oratrium; this began as early as the sixth century,if not before. In most cases we must thuik ofthem as of wood, roofed with shingles or tiles orwith flat terraces, though there was probably inthe richer houses not only a profuse painteddecoration but the use of terra-cotta revetmentas in the temples.
