[1] Broken into two refitting halves. Some circumferential chips.

[2] R in VR[BS ROMA] resembles an A (as in Hoxne 634).

[3] Two refitting fragments, still incomplete. Pteryges suggest AD 388-395 issue.

[4] Almost complete. Lightly clipped.

[5] Probably contemporary copy. Die axis: 7.

Discussion: Due to the fragmentary condition of the coins it has not been possible to attribute a significant proportion to either an emperor or mint. It is highly likely that a number of fragments within the current assemblage are parts of the same coins, however, only four were found to refit. This also meant that if was difficult to assess the degree of clipping (if any) on most coins, however, the majority which retained part of an original edge appeared to be intact, or only lightly clipped. Most of the breaks were relatively fresh and it is likely that further investigation of the site will result in the recovery of further coins or fragments.

The latest coin deposited was that of Honorius (struck c. AD 395 -402), giving a probable deposition date in the first two decades of the fifth century.

A number of coin hoards of similar date and composition have been reported as Treasure and are recorded on the PAS database including: GLO-9D7F36 (2014 T599), LVPL-B38AFC (2014 T539), YORYM-F6AE88 (2014 T45), SOM-111833 (2011 T233) & DUR-F2C867 (2012 T432).

Groups of two or more coins of precious metal and over 300 years old at the time of finding qualify as potential Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
