Title
Roman copper alloy zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: A Roman, copper alloy horse and rider brooch, measuring 25mm in length, 17.5mm in width, and 5.6mm in depth. The brooch weighs 2.34 grams, and is missing much of the horse's head and legs.

The brooch depicts the profile of a horse and rider galloping to the right. The rider is leant backwards, probably to imply the motion of the horse, and has a peaked hairstyle or helmet. A circular indentation for the eye is just visible. Two of the four cells are on the body of the rider; a small circular cell, and one linear cell depicting the riders arm.

The two cells on the body of the horse, one elongated oval on the chest, and one hooked cell running the length of the body, have retained some blue and red enamel. The remains of the head show incised lines used to suggest the horse's mane.

The reverse of the brooch shows the remains of the catchplate, and the lug, including a portion of the iron pin.

The object is similar to 611, Figure 218, in Hattatt, R., 'A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattatt's Ancient Brooches'.
