Title |
Roman copper alloy zoomorphic brooch |
||
Description |
English: A Roman, copper alloy horse and rider brooch, measuring 26.28mm in length, 20.28mm in width, and 4.83mm in depth. The brooch weighs 1.93 grams, and is missing much of the rear portion of the horse's body.
The brooch depicts the profile of a horse and rider facing to the right. The rider is leaning backwards slightly, and although any detailed facial features have been eroded, the flowing outline of the rider's head denotes what is either a peaked hairstyle or more probably a plumed helmet. Two of the four cells evident on this brooch are on the sub-triangular body of the rider; one linear cell running diagonally downwards from the rider's head to the body of the horse, and a second smaller pointed cell running roughly parallel with the first. This latter cell shows remnants of red enamel. The horse is semi-naturalistic. The outline of the face quite realistically depicts the profile of a horse's head, distinguishing between the forehead and snout rather than a more simplistic sloping line straight to the nose. The head is detailed through the use of grooves to suggest a mane, including a longer notch which may be meant to separate an ear from the body of the mane. The one partially remaining leg of the horse is positioned forward in such a manner as to suggest it were galloping forward. The two cells apparent on the horse's body are a sub-triangular cell positioned on the horse's chest, and a linear cell running the length of the horse's remaining body. Again this latter cell displays vestiges of red enamel. The reverse of the brooch is missing most of the pinning mechanism (largely because the lug would have been positioned on the portion of the brooch which is missing), however, there is evidence of the catchplate. |
