Title
Roman copper alloy zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: A Roman, copper alloy horse and rider brooch, measuring 21.54mm in length, 16.54mm in width, and 5.75mm in depth. The brooch weighs 2.15 grams, and is missing the rider's head, as well as parts of the face, legs and tail of the horse.

The brooch depicts the profile of a horse and rider facing to the right. What remains of the rider is a sub-triangular body containing two of the brooches four cells; one linear cell running diagonally downwards from where the rider's head would have been to the body of the horse, over a second small circular cell.

The marginally more complete horse demonstrates the use of grooves to suggest a mane, and includes the detail of a small circular indentation for an eye. The snout of the horse is missing. Although much of the legs are also missing, it is noteworthy that a small protrusion indicates the inclusion of a third leg, rather than the more common and more simplistic design which would have showed just the legs of the horse's right-hand side. The two cells on the horse's body are a linear cell running horizontally along the length of the horse and ending in a hook on its hind leg, and an elongated oval cell on the horse's chest. This latter cell contains remnants of red enamel.

The remains of the pinning mechanism is apparent on the reverse of the brooch, including an intact catchplate, and evidence of the lug. The pin itself however, is missing.
