Title
Roman copper alloy zoomorphic plate brooch
Description
English: A Roman, copper alloy horse and rider brooch, measuring 21.08mm in length, 15.88mm in width, and 4.05mm in depth. The brooch weighs 1.66 grams, and is missing much of the rider, as well as portions of the head, legs and tail of the horse.

The brooch depicts the profile of a horse and rider facing to the right. What little remains of the rider is his sub-triangular body.

The horse is more complete than its rider. As with the rider however, most detail has been lost to erosion. The partial remains of the head do display evidence of notches denoting a mane. Also, although much of the legs are missing, a small protrusion from beneath the body of the horse indicates that this brooch's design included a third leg, rather than the more common and more simplistic design which would have showed just the legs of the horse's right-hand side. The three cells of the brooch are positioned on the horse's body; a linear cell running horizontally along the length of the horse and ending in a hook on its hind leg, below a small circular cell, and behind a large oval cell on the horse's chest. The linear cell contains red enamel residue.

The reverse of the brooch displays some remnants of the pinning mechanism, including a portion of the lug and a mostly intact catchplate. The pin itself however, is missing.
