Title
Roman copper alloy zoomorphic plate brooch
Description
English: A Roman, copper alloy horse and rider brooch, measuring 19.22mm in length, 11.36mm in width, and 5.76mm in depth. The brooch weighs 1.43 grams, and is missing the head's of the rider and horse, as well as the horse's legs and tail.

The brooch depicts the profile of a horse and rider facing to the right. The rider's sub-triangular body is leaning backwards, probably to suggest the movement of the horse, and contains two of the brooch's four cells; a linear cell travelling diagonally from the rider's head down to the body of the horse, and a small circular cell beneath this. The former cell is suggestive of the rider's arm.

As with the rider any detail has been lost to erosion, but again there are two obvious cells; a linear cell running horizontally along the length of the horse and ending in a hook on its hind leg, and a large oval cell on the horse's chest. This oval cell contains red enamel residue. A small protrusion from beneath the body of the horse indicates the inclusion of a central leg, belonging to the rider.

The reverse of the brooch displays some remnants of the pinning mechanism, including the lug and catchplate. The copper alloy spring mechanism is present, a rare survival in these brooches.
