Title |
Roman dragonesque brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy Dragonesque brooch, dating from the mid-first to late second centuries. The body of the brooch is present and is S-shaped, terminating in a stylised animal head. No details of the head can be made out; however, there is red enamel present on either end of the head. The centre of the body has a lattice design, with three central lozenges filled with yellow enamel. Either side of the lozenges is a row of triangles, which are filled with red enamel. Between the animal head and the centre of the S, are three curved panels, in two of which red enamel can be seen. On the other side of the triangle/lozenge design is another set of three curved panels, again with red enamel in places. The brooch is broken through these panels but it can be assumed that another animal head would have formed the end to the S-shape. The break is worn. The reverse of the brooch is undecorated. The copper alloy is dark green, with brown corrosion on the reverse. The brooch is 43.2mm long and 27.8mm wide. A very similar Dragonesque brooch can be seen in Snape (1993, Figure 2 no. 14.2). |
