Title
Roman dragonesque brooch
Description
English: A copper alloy dragonesque brooch, dating from 75 - 175 AD. The brooch consists of a cast S shaped openwork plate, but the foot is missing. The upper surface has two decoration types - moulded and openwork. The central ornamentation of the brooch consists of a boss within a lozenge. This is held between the two edges of the openwork body, with apertures above and below. The sides of the brooch are rounded, and join at the top where there is a terminal in the form of an animal head. This has an 'ear' and 'eye', the eye being represented by a small raised boss with circumferential rib. The pin is missing, with just it's attachment loop wrapped round the neck. Openwork dragonesque brooches do not seem to be common. Others on the database include NCL-3EABC0, YORYM-586481 and YORYM-6EF031.
