Title
Roman mount in the form of a hawk or owl (possibly)
Description
English: A copper-alloy bird figurine of possible Roman date. No exact parallel could be found for this piece, which appears to represent a hawk or an owl. Small eagle figurines, however, are known from the Roman period, an example being that found at Silchester (M.Fulford and J.Timby; 2000). It is probably a mount from a sheet metal vessel. The three-dimensional bird has fine cast detail, with facial features visible and the feathers clearly defined. The bird has a rounded tail extending downwards from the underside of the main body section and large feet with flat undersides. It is slightly worn and corroded. The piece measures 23.9mm long by 17.5mm high and 9.2mm wide; it weighs 7.62g.
