Roman nail cleaner, leaf-shaped blade.
Description
English: Roman cast copper alloy nail cleaner of Baldock type with a moulded neck dating from the mid 1st century-2nd century. Circular suspension loop set at right angles to the plane of the blade. The junction between the loop and blade has bead, reel and spool mouldings. Leaf-shaped blade with tip broken off; a scored line runs up the centre of one side of the blade. Length 47.88mm, width 11.93mm, thickness (across handle/loop) 6.98mm, thickness (at top of “plate”) 2.52mm, internal diameter of loop 2.96mm, weight 5.31g. A similar nail cleaner, although with shorter handle and a groove on both sides of the blade, is published in Crummy 1983 ("The Roman small finds from excavations in Colchester 1971-9", Colchester Archaeological Trust) p58, no.1872.
