Title
Roman or early Anglo-Saxon buckle frame
Description
English: Buckle frame with zoomorphic decoration, of Hawkes and Dunning (1961) type 1B. In poor condition and unfinished, it is D-shaped with a straight bar on which a slightly off-centre casting sprue survives; casting flashes are visible around the edge of the buckle. The outer edge is formed by two face-to-face dolphins' heads, each with a ring-and-dot eye and open jaw, with a lozengiform moulding in between. On top of the dolphins' heads, the crests have developed into back-to-back horses' heads. These are more fragmentary but again each horse has a ring-and-dot eye. Only one face of the frame is decorated. These buckles are in themselves very interesting, as they span the late Roman/early Anglo-Saxon divide, but an unfinished one is exceptionally significant as they have in the past been thought to be imports.
