Title |
Roman pottery sherd. Illustrated by: Dom Andrews. |
||
Description |
English: A large body sherd of panel decorated Roman Samian Ware, weighing 33.6g. The panels have been divided by lines made of vertical pellets on the horizontal axis and horizontal pellets on the vertical axis. A small rosette marks each crossing point of the horzintal and vertical axis. Working from the top of the sherd downwards there is the remains of a deep incised groove. Below this there is a zone of decoration, which is made up of scrolling vegetation with curly tendrils and buds on the terminals. Below this the panel decoration begins. From left to right. The first small panel depicts a naked male figure with his left arm out stretched above his head; in his hand he is holding a small circular shield. To the right of this there is a panel which contains the image of a Roman solider, holding a small circular shield. His legs are extended as if he were running, there is a small leaf extend upwards between his legs. The top panel next along from this depicts a small mammal with a long tail. Below this, the panel contains some scrolling tendrils. The vessel has a relative uniform section, measuring c. 6mm. The slip coated sherd is a light brownish-red colour. The fabric is a pinkish colour with a ‘soapy texture’ which is smooth to the touch. The sherd itself is relatively un-worn and the breaks appear relatively fresh and un-abraded. This sherd dates to AD 70-150. |
