Title |
Roman sling shot |
||
Description |
English: Roman lead sling shot, probably dating from the 1st century AD.
The artefact is biconical, tapering to a sharp point at one end and a more rounded point at the other. The surfaces are convex. An assemblage of over 100 lead Roman sling-shots, found at the same farm as BH-BF5521 (a short distance to the south-east of the Roman town of Verulamium), is discussed by Greep (1987: 183-200), who suggests a mid 1st century date, based on associated early military equipment (ibid: 184). Although such objects have been found at sites throughout Roman Britain, it is noteworthy that of the four previously recorded examples on the PAS database, four - BH-BF5521, BH-EB2C32, BH-292632 and BH-27A5B4 - were also recovered from the same farm; the remaining shot, YORYM-7EB744, was found in Lincolnshire. This slingshot comes from an area of well known Roman occupation north of Maryport. |
