Title
Roman snake-form finger-ring
Description
English: A copper-alloy snake-form finger ring of Roman date. The ring is open-ended, the head set above, and slightly overlapping, the tail. The ring is formed of a thin band which is of roughly equal width throughout much of its length, widening only towards the rounded head. The upper surface of the head has moulded features in the form of longitudinal ridge bordered by two lower, shorter ridges, the back of the latter two marked by angled grooves. Adjacent to the head, and occupying approximately one third of the outer surface of the hoop, is a series of 'scales' comprised of three rows of punched indentations. The remainder of the ring is undecorated. The artefact measures 24.8mm wide, 26.5mm deep (front to back) and 11.3mm high (at the front). It weighs 3.99g. Snake-form rings are discussed by Johns (1996: 44-47). They are thought to have been introduced to Britain in the 1st century AD, although the majority probably date from later in the period. It is suggested that examples of this form, Ai (see Johns: 45), probably belong to the earliest group of serpentine jewellery.
