Title
Roman snake-form finger ring
Description
English: A Roman copper-alloy finger ring.

Although distorted and heavily corroded, this would appear to be a snake-form ring, the hoop taking the form of two snakes, each eating the tail of the other. The widest point of each snake is at the head, one of which retains a 'U-shaped' rim of applied silver or tin. The width of the snakes decrease towards the tail and there is no traces of surface decoration. The total length of the artefact is 27.4mm; the hoop measures a maximum of 5.5mm wide and 1.9mm thick. The weight is 1.53g.

According to Catherine Johns, 'Serpentiform jewellery was introduced to Britain the first century AD, and continued to be used for most of the Roman period, although datable examples tend to belong to the early and middle Empire' (Johns 1996: 44). This particular example doesn't not fit with any of the categories in Johns's classification system; nevertheless, a Roman date seems highly probable.
