Title |
Roman steelyard weight |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy Roman steelyard weight in form of a female bust.
The upper surface of the artefact is moulded in high relief, while the back is largely flat, the only exception being at the head, where the moulding continues behind. The torso is sub-oval in plan and bears a representation of a garment with a double 'V-neck'. The upper arms appear to be depicted as if held tight to the body, the lower arms folded at waist level. At the base of the torso is a narrower protrusion with a transverse band which would appear to represent a damaged attachment or the remnant of a projecting element. The neck is slender and there is a suggestion of an indented, beaded necklace. The face is also narrow, its features having been lost due to heavy wear through use. The face is framed at the top and sides by a band of hair, which protrudes from beneath a tall, rounded helmet, the crest of which has been perforated at the top, forming a suspension loop. The surfaces of the piece retain traces of a black coating. The artefact measures 45.7mm long, 19.7mm wide and 11.5mm thick. The weight is 20.57g, which is slightly below the Roman uncia of 27.29g, probably as a result of wear. |
