Title
Roman steelyard weight
Description
English: A lead alloy steelyard weight, probably dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410). The weight is biconical with remains of a circular iron suspension loop shaft protruding from the top and bottom. The form is usually considered as Roman, and the beam balance is thought to have been lost in Britain between the end of the Roman period and the later medieval period when it was reintroduced from the continent. The steelyard weight measures 28.56mm high, 26.66mm in diameter and weighs 70 grams. Many similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database; for example, cf.: IOW-5D2D47 and SOM-5B2F75.
