Title
Roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch dating to circa AD 100-200. The brooch is complete save for its spring and pin. It consists of a flat, thin plate depicting a boar. The boar has an upturned snout and ears pointed forwards. Its brow is defined by a groove. Set back from the brow is a shallow, circular depression within the centre of which is a raised dot, representing the eye. The eye yields traces of white-metalling. Its mane is is defined by a series of obliquely inscribed grooves running along its neck and upper back. Its back arches inwards before rising again creating a U-shape. Its lower back is a plain and slightly rounded before terminating in a 90 degree offset rounded knop for the tale. Its underside contains the hind and fore limbs set either side of a straightly-cast stomach and chest. The hind limbs are represented a short stump whilst the fore limbs are more elaborate, leaning forwards.

The front face of the plate contains a large recessed panel, following the shape of the edges of the boar, containing a decorative motif. The panel is delineated by a curved elongated line in relief, which curls back on itself as it approaches the rear of the panel. Situated above the top of the elongated line is a pellet, which may have been a part of a series of three, although this is now unclear. Comparison with similar examples of this type, such as SUSS-DB2C32, support this. Within the recessed panel traces of white-metalling remain. Other examples suggest the recessed panel would likely have been enamelled, although no traces are evident here.

Zoomorphic boar plate brooches are relatively uncommon finds, with only a handful recorded on the PAS database such as KENT-4229BC, SUSS-075460, SUSS-DB2C32, WILT-A2E866 and SF-4B7164 from Suffolk. The designs are not uniform with slight variations on the characterisation of the snout, tail and legs as well as differences in enamel colouring. This example most closely resembles WILT-A2E866.
