Title
Roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: A copper alloy zoomorphic brooch dating to the second century AD. The brooch is in the shape of a leopard. It comprises a flat D sectioned plate representing the body of the animal. The upper surface of the plate possesses two rows of circular cells, five of which contain blue enamel. Extending below the body are the worn remains of a back leg and two front legs. A worn cast head extends at right angles to the main plate. Its features include pointed ears and a rib for a mouth. On the underside of the body plate, there are two semi-circular perforated lugs which would have held the pin in place. The catchplate is missing but there is a rectangular scar visible where it would have been. The brooch measures 34mm in length, 15mm in width and 14mm in thickness. The brooch is similar to an example illustrated in Hattatt's 'A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattatt's Ancient Brooches', No. 1196, Fig 222, p. 363.
