Title
Roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: A copper alloy zoomorphic brooch dating to the second century AD. The brooch is in the form of a duck. The body is sub-oval in shape and has been divided into two sub-triangular cells representing wings. Each cell is filled with degraded red enamel. A rib runs centrally the length of the body and extends to the neck, head and beak of the bird. Remnants of knurled tinning/silvering are visible adhering to this rib. On the underside of the body, there is a small semi-circular catchplate and two semi-circular attachment lugs with circular perforations. The axis bar and part of the pin are still in situ. The brooch measures 25mm in length and a maximum of 9mm in width.
