Title
Roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper alloy zoomorphic brooch in the form of a duck dating from the late 2nd to early 3rd Century. The brooch is missing its pin apart from the hinged end which remains trapped between the pin lugs.

The brooch is shaped like a duck or other swimming water bird with a rounded front and tear-drop shaped body that tapers towards the tail end. The neck is short and stocky, curving forwards, and the head is missing. The back of the duck is decorated with curved recesses indicating feathers. These contain traces of decayed enamel. The underside of the brooch is hollow. There is brown corrosion around the stub of the catch plate which has spread to coat part of the underside. The brooch has a medium-light green patina and the metal underneath has a brown colour. For a similar duck brooch, please also see SWYOR-8FC567 and SWYOR-4C36F5. For reference see Hattatt (2000: 360; figure 219). The brooch is 28.46mm long, 10.9mm wide and 13.9mm tall. It weighs 4.11g.
