Title |
Roman zoomorphic brooch |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy enamelled Roman zoomorphic brooch in the form of a duck, AD 100-200. The duck form of the brooch is comprised of an oval plate with parallel lines along the length forming the back and wings of the bird. The wings are decorated with a blue enamel. There is also a trace of red enamel along the back between the wings. The brooch has a slender rounded neck with a long sweeping curved bill. Projecting from the tail is the remains of a broken loop. The underside of the brooch is plain and has the attachment point and the catch plate for the pin. Both are damaged and the pin is missing. The brooch shows traces of corrosion and has the remains of a green patina. The upper surface has traces of silvery colour particularly at the base of the neck suggesting it has been tinned or silvered. The brooch measures 25.5mm long from the broken loop at the back to the end of the bill. The body measures 19.4mm long, 8.3mm wide 2.6mm thick, 4.7mm thick at attachment point. It weighs 2.77 grams. Similar brooches can be seen Hattatt R (2000) pp 360, fig 219, which he dates to the 2nd century AD. |
