Title |
Roman zoomorphic brooch |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch dating to the second century AD. The brooch comprises a flat plate in the form of an eagle with wings folded and head bent, emphasising the curve of its beak. The talons are rendered as an L-shaped extension, which is extremely worn. They eye is picked out as an incised ring and dot. The upper surface of the plate is decorated with two parallel rows of cells, three crescental in form followed by a single triangular cell. These cells are filled with alternating degraded red and blue enamel. On the underside of the brooch are the remains of a semi-circular catchplate and a single worn lug. The brooch measures 30mm in length, 15mm in width and 4mm in thickness.
Similar brooches are known from Nornour (Hull 1968, no. 133), Henley Wood in Somerset (Butcher 1996), York and Aldborough (Smith 1852). Bayley and Butcher (2004, 175) note that the depiction of the eagle is unlike the usual Roman eagle with wings spread and may represent a motif from a story current in the Roman period. It may be that they were connected with specific religious cults. Some have been found in clear religious or votive contexts, but the majority occur on apparently secular sites. |
