Title
Roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy, flat zoomorphic brooch dating to the Roman period (c.AD. 100-200).

The brooch is in the form of a springing lion; it is flat on the front and reverse and sub-rectangular in cross-section.  The brooch is convex on the front and concave on the reverse.  The head consists of a (now missing) enamelled eye and a notched mane on both top and bottom edges with crescental punch-marks within, which terminates in two transverse knurled ribs across the neck.  The body of the lion is composed of a recessed panel, which is missing its enamel.

On the reverse the pin is missing but remains of the catchpate projects from the lower portion of the head, and the pin attachment projects from the rump of the lion.

The brooch has a very dark green and slightly shiny patina on both faces, possibly the result of cleaning by the finder.

Highly comparable to Hattatt (1985:173), fig.70, no.618.

Dimensions - length: 28.2mm; width: 12.4mm; thickness 1.6mm (inc. pin attachment: 5.7mm); weight: 2.02g.
