Title
Roman zoomorphic brooch back
Description
English: Copper alloy zoomorphic brooch in the form of a facing quadruped, most probably a lion. The decoration is obscured by wear and corrosion but there are three circular cells running transversely across the flank, one still containing traces of blue enamel. The rump has traces of at least seven similar cells, running in a roughly circular pattern. The eyes are represented by two pits; these probably did not hold enamel. The back is very worn and corroded but what appear to be traces of the stumps of a fastening for the pin and a catchplate are just discernible. Length approximately 30mm, weight 10.29g. 2nd-3rd century
