Title
Roman zoomorphic plate brooch
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy Roman zoomorphic plate brooch in the form of a sea serpent. The body is in a continuous curve with the fishy tail recurved, the whole forming a reverse S-shape with a dorsal fin near the head and a frontal one near the tail. The head is in profile facing left, the features indented and it is crowned. The dorsal fin is punch-marked with crescents, the smaller frontal one has a serrated edge. Body and tail are enamelled; within the recessed fields slight traces of blue and red enamel survive in the body; the tail has two sub-triangular cells of bright orange/red colour. The hinged pin (now missing) would have been attached at a double pierced lug on the reverse of the frontal fin and would have been retained by a sub-triangular catchplate, now abraded, on the reverse of the head. A parallel can be found illustrated in Hattatt (2001, 363; ref. 1206). This brooch has been bent slightly in profile.
