Title
Roman zoomorphic plate brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic plate brooch of Roman date. Half of the plate, the pin and catchplate are missing due to old breaks. The plate is in the form of an animal running right, probably a dog. Its hind quarters are preserved, comprising a tapering triangular body with narrow hind leg that is incomplete below the knee, and an incomplete, thin tail that appears to be curving upwards behind the hind quarters before terminating in old breaks. On the front face is a large recessed field that covers most of the body and an oval shaped area at the top of the hind leg. This contains the remains of red enamel. On the back face of the fragment is an integrally cast semi-circular double lug with separately cast copper-alloy bar from which the now missing pin would have hinged. The brooch measures 19.33mm in length, 11.69mm in height, 1.32mm in thickness, and weighs 1.76g.

Similar zoomorphic brooches in the form of dogs are published by Hattatt (1989: nos. 610, 1187-1188) with his no. 610 providing the closest parallel to the current example. These indicate a date in the 2nd century AD for the brooch.
