Title |
Roman zoomorphic plate brooch (bird) |
||
Description |
English: A worn and incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman plate brooch of the zoomorphic type, specifically a bird in flight. Comparison with other such brooches illustrated in Hattatt (2000, 361; fig. 220) suggests that just over half of the original brooch survives. The bird's breast and wings are formed of a broken semicircle, which constricts and is recessed into a peltaic form. The wings are therefore formed of rounded points at the ends of the semicircle; one of these has been broken at the tip. The wing tips are raised upwards slightly, probably deliberately. Between the recesses the body begins, 5.1mm wide, tapering to 3.4mm where it is broken. It is supposed that the body would have continued as per other examples, flaring out to a trapezoidal tail with possible chain loop terminal. At the other end a curving neck emerges from the body, ending in a slightly flattened beak in aligned to the front of the semicircle. The neck is no longer perpendicular to the body as a result of old damage. The back of the bird was decorated with enamelling through the champlevé technique. There are shallow recesses in the wings and the body behind the neck; traces of blue enamel are retained in the latter. As is common with this type the lower face has its catchplate below the neck. This survives well and travels for 8.1mm. Most of the illustrated examples have a pin lug below the tail, around which a hinged pin; sprung pin mechanisms are rare. The brooch has corroded to a light green colour. |
